CHAPTER 18

The next night, as the autumn season lent a chill to the air, thousands of people filled Princess Anne’s football stadium to watch their beloved team, and the city’s favorite sports’ star, perform. He did not disappoint. After scoring his third touchdown of the game, Slade sat on the bench while his teammates celebrated, listening to the crowd chant his name, feeding his already massive ego.

Alex approached his friend with a cup of water in each hand. He handed Slade his refreshment and refused to take a drink until Slade drank first. When Slade gave his nod of approval, Alex sat and then quenched his thirst with a huge drink. After he was finished, Alex crumpled the cup and threw it on the ground. He went back for a second helping, but during his journey, he noticed the cheerleaders in their tight, skimpy outfits, so he decided to take a few seconds to watch them perform their routine. Pleased at what he saw, the quarterback grabbed his refreshment and turned to return to his seat. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Emily and Rose conversing, so he decided to eavesdrop on their private conversation.

“So you and Sammy have been spending a lot of time together lately.” Rose nudged Emily’s shoulder with hers. “How did the date go yesterday, and will there be another?”

Joanne leaned in on their conversation by looking over Rose’s shoulder. “Yes, inquiring minds want to know.”

The mere mention of Sammy’s name produced a huge grin from Emily. She twirled her hair, shook her head, and let out a school-girl giggle that dumbfounded her friends. “He’s amazing. We had a wonderful time on our date last night.” She closed her eyes and thought back to their evening. “We had a fantastic dinner and then went to a movie; he did not like the movie that much, but when that loud clap of thunder hit, he held me in his strong arms.” She wrapped herself in her arms and imagined it was Sammy holding her as she closed her eyes. “Words can’t describe how he made me feel, and then he kissed me.”

“He kissed you?” Rose shouted.

“Yes, and it was magical,” Emily replied.

“I know you are excited and that’s fine, but how does the whole Cathy thing play into this? They were very close, and you two were not friends,” Joanne said.

“I don’t think he’s over her death and won’t be anytime soon, but the way he looks at me, the way he kisses me, and the tender moments we share lead me to believe that he wants me and only me.” Emily smiled once again. “We have a picnic planned for tomorrow, and I can’t wait.”

The three cheerleaders continued their banter, but Alex had heard all he needed to hear. He grabbed two more cups of water and returned to the bench, once again waiting for Slade’s approval before taking a drink. “You won’t believe what I just heard.”

Slade finished his drink, focusing on the game and dismissing what Alex had to say.
